onions in our stockings

We had onions in our stockings
as oranges weren't invented
our toys were string and sticks
for which we were contented
the best ever present
was a second hand pen knife
there was always sickness at Christmas
TB was rife
now we've gadgets in the kitchen
to make housework a breeze
so how come our cherished children
are so bloody hard to please
